Open Source Java, they're trying again

After promising us a yet-to-see J2EE server because LGPL is evil more than a year and a half ago, Geir Magnusson is back on proposing this time the full J2SE 1.5 (with JNI, AWT, RMI, CORBA and all that jazz). The main reasons are: GPL is evil, the other Open Source projects are not fast enough, obviously because GPL is evil. Surprinsingly they managed to take with them Dalibor Topic, a very active and long term contributor of Kaffe. Only one question remains, how long?

Update: talking with Dalibor on IRC (very nice), it seems that his goals are to avoid code duplication, and the way to go is to reconciliate ASF and the FSF licenses. Moreover, GNU Classpath has a very liberal "linking policy" license, so it seems doable. Dalibor promises to update his blog on that topic, stay tuned. Meanwhile, good luck to all.

Update 2: Dalibor wrote it: Cleaning up a bit after the Harmony announcement.
